Can’t Pick Up Right Now? Use Custom iMessage Replies in iOS | Dramel Notes

Posted On // Leave a Comment

Sometimes, no matter how much we want to talk to someone, we’re stuck in a position where we can’t answer the phone. Apple has a feature in iOS that allows you to hit a quick button and respond to the person who’s calling with a text message. There are three responses included by default, but you can actually change these to anything you want!

Go to Settings, then scroll down and tap Phone. Tap Respond with Text, which is the third item from the top. In there you’ll see three default Apple responses. Just tap on the one you want to change and type in whatever you want.

Now, when someone calls, you’ll see the option to respond with text, but instead of the three default responses, you’ll see your custom messages. Regardless of whether you use your own or the default messages, you are still limited to three, so make them count!

What are you going to use for your custom text replies? Be nice!

How to Enable Handoff on Your Apple Watch | Dramel Notes

Posted On // Leave a Comment

Handoff is the feature on Apple Watch and iPhone that allows you to start a task on one device and finish it on another. For example, you might check email on your watch and then switch to your phone to compose a reply.

You must use your iPhone to enable the Handoff feature on your Apple Watch. Tap the “Watch” app icon on your phone’s Home screen.

Make sure the “My Watch” screen is active. If not, tap the “My Watch” icon at the bottom of the screen.

Tap “General” on the “My Watch” screen.

On the “General” screen, tap the “Enable Handoff” slider button to turn on the feature. The button turns green when it’s enabled.

Now, you can perform a task on your watch, such as viewing an email message.

Then, you can access your iPhone to see an email icon in the lower-left corner of the lock screen. Drag up on the icon.

You may be prompted to enter your passcode to access your phone, but once you log in the email you were reading on your watch displays on your iPhone screen.

Handoff works with Mail, Maps, Messages, Phone, Reminders, and Calendar, and Siri. Your Apple Watch must be in close proximity to your iPhone for the Handoff feature to work.

Handoff is part of the technology called Continuity that allows you to transfer tasks among your iOS devices and your Mac. Continuity also includes Phone Call Forwarding, Text Forwarding, and Personal Hotspot.

How to Add Your Music Library to Steam and Use the Steam Music Player | Dramel Notes

Posted On // Leave a Comment

Steam’s Music Player allows you to add a MP3 file stored on your computer to a local music library and play it back — inside or outside a game, with a controller or keyboard and mouse. This would be particularly useful on a Steam Machine or living-room gaming PC in Big Picture Mode.

This works in Steam on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Steam OS. You can add music and play it back either from the desktop interface, or through Big Picture Mode.

Add Your Music Library From the Desktop

To get started, click the “Steam” menu in Steam and select “Settings”. Click over to the “Music” tab in the Settings window.

Click the “Add” button and add one or more directories on your PC that contain music files. By default, Steam automatically scans its own directory for soundtracks and your user account’s “Music” directory. Click “Scan Now” to have Steam detect the music when you’re done.

If you regularly add new music files to your library, click the “Scan at Startup” checkbox and Steam will automatically scan your library for new music when you load it. You’ll have to either relaunch Steam with those option enabled or visit this window and click “Scan Now” to find new music.

You can adjust other options from this window, too. For example, you can have Steam automatically pause music when you start an application, and control whether it’s automatically paused while you’re voice chatting within Steam. You can also choose whether you want to see a notification when the track changes.

Play Music From the Desktop

To view your music library, you can visit the “Library” tab in Steam, click the label at the right side of your search box, and select “Music” to view your music library instead of your game library. You can also just click View > Music details to view your music library.

If you have some games that include soundtracks installed, you might see some music here even if you haven’t provided any of your own music yet.

Start playing music back from your library and the music player will appear. You can also select View > Music player to open it.

Of course, this feature is particularly useful because you can control music playback from within games without Alt+Tabbing. After all, Alt+Tab can cause problems with many games.

To do this, open the Steam overlay within a game. The default shortcut for this is Shift+Tab. You can customize the shortcut from within Steam by clicking Steam > Settings, selecting “In-Game” in the Settings window, and providing a new shortcut here.

At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see a “Music” link. This will open the music player in the overlay and allow you to control playback. Just press the overlay shortcut again — Shift+Tab by default — to quickly close the overlay and get back to the game.

Add Your Music Library From Big Picture Mode

You can do this same thing from within Big Picture Mode. These settings are shared, so if you’ve already set this up on the desktop, you won’t have to set it up separately in Big Picture Mode.

However, if you have a Steam Machine or just a living-room PC running Steam, Big Picture Mode will allow you to set this feature up and control playback with just a controller.

In Big Picture Mode — launch it by clicking the controller icon at the top-right corner of the desktop if you’re in desktop mode — use your controller or mouse to select the gear-shaped settings icon at the top-right corner of the screen.

Select “Music” under Audio on the Settings screen.

This screen provides the same options for configuring your music library. To add new folders containing music, select “Setup music library” and add the folders in the dialog that appears.

If you have a Steam Machine and you don’t want to mess with the file system, you should just be able to put some music on a USB flash drive or external hard drive and plug it into your Steam Machine. Then, select the drive from this window. This would work on any computer to enable access to music stored on a removable drive, of course.

Play Music From Big Picture Mode

The Music Player works similarly in Big Picture Mode. To access it, visit the “Library” section and select the “Local Music” category on the left.

You’ll see a thumbnail-style list of all the albums available on your PC. Select an album and you’ll be able to play the entire album or a single song from it.

When you do, the Steam Music Player will appear. While you’re playing music, there will be a music note button at the top-right corner of the main screen that allows you to quickly pull up the music player.

While in a game, you can pull up the Steam Overlay — using the keyboard shortcut, by pressing the Steam button on a Steam Controller, or by pressing the Xbox button in the center of an Xbox Controller. You’ll see a “Now Playing” box with the music that’s currently playing. Select it to open the music player.

This feature is a bit basic, but Valve may improve it in the future. Possibilities include integration with Spotify, Pandora, and other music-streaming services. Valve will hopefully add support for more than just MP3s in the future, too.

The 10 Best Ways to Use Force Touch on Your Apple Watch | Dramel Notes

Posted On // Leave a Comment

The Force Touch feature on Apple Watch is similar to a right mouse click in Windows. It allows you to quickly access contextually-specific options on the watch. We’ll show you 10 useful ways you can use Force Touch in different apps on your watch.

Change and Customize Watch Faces

This is probably the most common use for Force Touch. Press firmly on the watch face to access the interface that allows you to change to a different watch face and customize the different watch faces.

NOTE: You can also use a single photo or photo album to create a custom watch face and make the Modular watch face multi-colored.

Change the View in the Weather App

When you open the “Weather” app on your Apple Watch, it displays the weather conditions by default. However, you can use Force Touch to change the view.

Press firmly on the watch face to access the three options for viewing the weather in the app. Tap on one of the options to change the view.

NOTE: You can also tap on the current view to cycle through the three different views.

Change the View in the Calendar App

By default, when you first open the Calendar app on your watch, the “Day” view displays. After that, the last view used is the one that displays when you open the app. Use Force Touch to quickly change the Calendar view. In the current view, press firmly on the watch screen.

Tap “List” to view the events for “Today” in list form.

NOTE: Tap the “Today” link in the upper-left corner of the watch screen to view the whole month at a glance. Tap the monthly calendar to return to the “Today” view (“Day” or “List”, whichever format was last being viewed).

Pressing firmly again allows you to go back to the “Day” view.

Flag and Delete Email, Mark Email as Unread, and Reply to Email in the Mail App

The “Mail” app on Apple Watch allows you not only to view your email messages, but also take action on them using Force Touch. When you open the mail app, tap on the email you want to flag, delete, mark as unread, or reply to.

Once the desired email message is open, press firmly on the watch screen to access the options for dealing with the current email message.

Clear All Notifications

This is handy if you get a lot of notifications at once. Rather than dismissing each separate notification, you can quickly and easily clear all notifications. When you get notifications, open the main list of notifications and press firmly on the watch screen. Tap the “Clear All” button to dismiss, or clear, all the notifications.

Create a New Text Message

One nice feature of the Apple Watch is the ability to create and send a text message using the watch. It still gets delivered through your iPhone, but you don’t have to take out the phone to create it. Simply use Force Touch in the “Messages” app to create a new message.

Open the “Messages” app and press firmly on the main “Messages” screen.

Tap the “New Message” button that displays and use the “New Message” screen to add a contact and create your message.

When creating your message, you can either choose from the list of default messages, speak your message, or send an emoji.

NOTE: You can create custom messages for use when sending new messages or replying to messages you receive.

Send Your Location in the Messages App

If your meeting someone, instead of trying to describe where you are, send them your location in a text message. They can use the location they receive to get directions to where you are. This is easily accomplished using Force Touch in the “Messages” app.

We’ve already covered how to quickly share your location using “Messages” on your Apple Watch.

Add a New Alarm

Just like multi-function watches such as Casio, your Apple Watch also has an Alarm function. When you open the “Alarms” app, all alarms you have added display in a list and slider buttons indicate whether they are on (green) or off (gray). Alarms that are off also display in gray text rather than white.

The Force Touch feature is used to create new alarms in the app. Press firmly on the main “Alarms” screen.

Tap the “Add Alarm” button that displays and set the options for the alarm.

Shuffle, Repeat, and AirPlay Controls and Change Source in the Music App

Your Apple Watch allows you to control music on your iPhone as well as music directly on watch itself. The Force Touch feature provides access to the different options on the different screens in the app.

Open the “Music” app and press firmly on the main “Music” screen.

Tap the “Source” button to specify whether you want to play music on your iPhone or on the watch.

NOTE: You can transfer up to 2GB of music to your watch and play it directly from there using Bluetooth headphones or speakers. See our article to find out how.

Additional options are available when you go to the “Now Playing” screen and use Force Touch. Press firmly on the “Now Playing” screen.

The “Shuffle”, “Repeat”, and “AirPlay” options display. You can also change the “Source” of the music from this screen.

Search for Locations in the Apple Maps App

You can use your Apple Watch to search for locations in the “Maps” app, rather than taking out your phone, using Force Touch. When you open the “Maps” app, your current location displays. Press firmly on the watch screen.

Tap the “Search” button to search for a specific location. You can speak the address you want to find using the “Dictation” button or you can select a location from the “Recents” list.

NOTE: You can also get the location of any contact for which you have an address, using the “Contacts” button and get maps for and directions to transit systems using the “Transit” button.

There are other ways to use the Force Touch feature on the Apple Watch, such as changing the stopwatch and timer modes, changing the move goal in the “Activity” app, and even changing the color of the emojis in the “Messages” app. You can also try Force Touch in third-party apps to discover additional options, if any are available.

4 Extensions To Create Killer Wishlists — That Aren’t Amazon! | Dramel Notes

Posted On // Leave a Comment

When it is time to begin or catch up on your holiday shopping and you find items online that you want to save, a wish list is the perfect spot. Amazon is popular for their wish list feature that allows you to save any item from any site. But believe it or not, not everyone uses Amazon or even has account. So, here are a few browser extensions that you non-Amazon shoppers can check out for creating your own wish and gift lists.

Wisp Wishlists

The Wisp Wishlists extension provides an easy way to add items from any website you visit. You can add a note to the product which is handy for including a color or size. You can add items to an existing list and also create a new list, which can be made public or private, right from the pop-up. Then when you want to see your lists and products, head over to the Wisp Wishlists website and sign in.

You can edit lists as well as items and you can invite friends so that sharing lists is easy. And, the site also offers items that you can browse through and add to your own list. Wisp Wishlists has extensions for Firefox and Chrome, with bookmarkets for Safari and Internet Explorer.

TAGGR

For Chrome as well as mobile devices, TAGGR is a good option. Select an existing list or create a new one to save your product within the pop-up. A nice feature of this tool is that when you “TAGG” an item, that item is checked daily by the system for price changes. So, if you happen to be waiting for a product to go on sale, TAGGR will let you know when it does. Then just check out your wish lists on your mobile device and click to go directly to the source and make a purchase.

Just a note, while the currency for wish list totals currently appears in pounds, individual items added in USD, for example, should reflect correctly. TAGGR is available for iOS and Android for free and the Chrome extension is meant to be an accompaniment for the mobile app so that you can access your lists from anywhere.

Shoptagr

We looked at this extension a while back as a terrific shopping tool for Safari users, but there is also an add-on for Chrome users and a bookmarklet for other browsers. Shoptagr works with over 500 stores worldwide. As with the others, you can select an existing wish list or create a new one. This tool also includes the color and size options from the products you add, making it very convenient to capture all the details.

You can also choose to be notified when there is any price change on the item or when it is 25 or 50 percent off. This is a truly handy feature so that you can be alerted of price changes. When you visit your account on the Shoptagr website you have options to share your list via social media or with a direct link, sort and search for items and retailers, or head directly to the original site to buy your item.

Wishtack

Wishtack is another great option for Chrome users. With this tool, you can add items to your wish list or share them directly from the pop-up to your favorite social media site or via email. Then just log into the Wishtack website to see your list and items. Go directly to the original store to purchase items or invite your friends to share products.

While logged in, you can even browse for some gift ideas with a convenient filter for activity such as music lover or traveler. You can also filter items by price range and men, women, or children. Then just click to add any item to your own wish list.

What Do You Use for Your Wish Lists?

Are you a die-hard Amazon wish list user, do you use one of the above options already, or do you prefer something totally different like a basic to-do list application? Or, maybe you do just like Santa Claus does with his naughty and nice list and rely on simple pen and paper. Feel free to share your comments below!

How to Enable Wi-Fi Calling on an Android Phone | Dramel Notes

Posted On // Leave a Comment

Wi-Fi calling allows your smartphone to place and receive phone calls, as well as send and receive SMS messages over Wi-Fi instead of the cellular network. Your phone will seamlessly hand off to the cellular network when you move out of Wi-FI range.

Android phones have supported this for longer than the iPhone has, but often just with customized Android devices purchased from the cellular carrier itself. There are also other Wi-Fi calling solutions you can use, including Google Hangouts, Google Voice, and Skype.

Enable Android’s Wi-Fi Calling Support

This feature is now integrated into the latest versions of Android in a more standard way. One day, you’ll hopefully be able to get any Android phone and enable Wi-Fi calling on any cellular carrier’s network if that carrier supports it, just as you can with iPhones.

If Wi-Fi calling is an option, you should find it in a standard place. Open the Settings app on your Android phone and tap the “More” or “More Settings” button under Wireless & network.

You’ll see a “Wi-Fi Calling” option here — activate it to enable the feature. If you don’t want to use Wi-FI calling, you can disable it from here, too.

This option won’t appear unless you’re using a phone with Wi-Fi calling support and are connected to a cellular network that works with it. But this is a quick way to check if you can currently use Wi-Fi calling. This option should hopefully become more standardized and widely available in the future.

As this is Android, it’s possible that your cellular carrier’s customizations — or the manufacturer’s customizations — have put a “Wi-Fi calling” option in a different place in the interface. You may need to search for the name of your smartphone, “Wi-FI calling”, and possibly the name of your cellular carrier.

Use an App Instead

Don’t see the “Wi-Fi calling” option there? Your cellular carrier may not offer this feature, or it may not work with your specific device. But there are other solutions you can use it you want to call and text from Wi-Fi.

Google’s Hangouts Dialer app will allow you to place phone calls from a Wi-Fi network. Most calls to the US and Canada are free, so this is an easy way to  place calls to the US and Canada from a Wi-Fi network. If you don’t have a Google Voice account, the recipient will see one of Google’s seemingly random phone numbers appear on their caller ID.

If you’re in the US, you might want to sign up for Google Voice. This will give you a dedicated phone number, and you can receive and place phone calls and participate in SMS conversations over Wi-Fi using it. Unlike some competitors, this is completely free — as long as you’re communicating with someone in the US or Canada.

Other solutions include Microsoft’s Skype app. It can be used for traditional phone calls and SMS messages all over the world, although that will cost you some money. It’s not free in the USA, as Google Voice is.

Of course, for communication, other apps that let you place audio calls and send text messages without relying on traditional phone numbers can also work. For example, you could have audio and text conversations with Google Hangouts, Skype, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and others. These all natively work over Wi-Fi or a cellular data connection, so you can use them even when you don’t have a cellular signal. The above solutions are only really necessary if you want to send and receive phone calls and text messages from phone numbers.
